Learning to lose the ones you lost
I'm a having a damn good go of it this week.
I've never had the best of memories, or grace, or general bodily skill and awareness of my surroundings, but the past week has taken the proverbial and then made damn sure the proverbial knew it!
So far I've managed to lose a 25+ pair of Sony earphones, a pair of Tesco Online Rental DVD's I was taking back, and frankly besides this, I think I'm just losing it in general; it's not so bad that I lose things, it's the fact I'm so oblivious to the fact until the dawning "event horizon" is reached, usually a few hours after the fact, when it strikes me like a tonne or bad news to the cerebellum, and pretty much depresses me to all extremes.
So what happened?
The earphones are a good lot to start with. I don't actually know what happened to the Sony MDR-EX71SL's I'd purchased for way too much last Summer (during the time spurts of white iPod bud related crimes had been picked up by the press, and that the iPod buds had gotten to me making my ears ache from a bad fit), as I had them with me a week ago last Sunday, but didn't the following Monday, I discovered after scrambling about the whole house in a headless-chicken-like state attempting to find them to listen to some music on my iPod on the way to Andrea's house; on the way into town on the Sunday I was definitely listening with them, but as I always do will have put them into one of the many pockets of my coat before actually meeting Andrea after work..this would of course be the last time I remember seeing them. Notice I said remember seeing them, as I'm not quite sure this was actually the last time I saw or felt them.
My two theories as to what happen stand something like this:
-
They got entangled with the keys in my inner pocket, and so in haste to extradite myself from either a) the outside world, or vice versa b) my house, I inadvertently decorated the pavement with some rather expensive earphones.
-
If they were in fact in my outside pocket, I may actually have dumped them, along with some used hankies (everyone go oooooo, everyone go ewwwwww), into a flippin' bin! Yes, that's right folks, muggins here, may actually have put his earphones in a rubbish bin!
Either way, I'm sure you'll agree, the verdict ain't a good'un, indeed, it's looking to be a big bad'un!
You've got to give me credit for a unique lossage on the last one, if that is how it actually occurred.
And now, for the more inane of the two tales (yes, it's actually more stupid than the last one..and duller..bet you didn't see that coming did you?) ..
I actually know how I lost the Tesco DVD's; I was on the way into town (to meet Andrea from work, this time last Saturday, a week after the now infamous earphones incident), and thought I'd return the DVD's by posting them in a postbox somewhere in town, I had gotten myself all comfortable on a barely-occupied bus, a rare occurrence in this city most will concur, placing the DVD's on the accompanying seat all by their lonesome..and when it came time to get off, calmly collected myself (and not them), got up, and vacated the bus. I'm sure the DVD's enjoyed their ride to Hessle, if in fact they made it the whole journey before someone made off with them.
Part of me has faith in the human condition, in someone's ability to merely see 2 freepost packages, not think, and post them.
That part of me enjoys the warm bit behind the kitchen cupboard, with the dust bunnies and lack of light, that it occupies pretty much exclusively. The majority-remainder of me knows they're either being sold on a market stall somewhere or in someone's lounge; don't ask me what someone would want with a Simpson's Christmas Special DVD, or the late 70's version of The 39 Steps, but I'm sure whoever is quite happy.
As for me, I continue to battle with my extreme inability to pick up objects, or observe some happening before my eyes, and Andrea continues to battle too..mainly with great mental anxiety, but also a great deal of patience.
Will I ever improve? Maybe, a good deal of me doubts, it, but I hope so.
Only time will tell..and a few more pairs of earphones thrown in bins no doubt.
Valentines Day Trials
This Valentines' definitely wasn't the easiest, but I dare so I and Andrea both made it through it and had a nice day to boot.
It's fair to say that things did not go according to plan; you see, it all started when I decided to buy Andrea an iPod mini, in one of her favourite colours of blue, with a message just for her laser engraved on the back, as she'd wanted one to replace my old Archos MP3 player that I'd given her when I purchased my 3G iPod.
However, despite ordering said item a week in advance, and it being shipped on Thursday, I'm still waiting to see a TNT delivery man with a package underarm for Mr Mason. I have of course explained all this Andrea, she's even seen the preview photo, and to make up for this whole faux pas, I gave her a few other gifts (mainly a dozen velvety red roses, a jewel encrusted "hidden secret" enamel puffin and a cuddly doggy from M&S).
Oh, but I forgot a card!
I won't ever live that last bit down (it's worse than the whole mini fiasco, I could've gotten away with no presents as long as I'd gotten a card).
There were a few other pitfalls during the day, such as my throwing plans off by sleeping in (and not going to uni), Andrea being ill, and the icing on the cake, forgetting my insulin and having to call up a rather pissed father to ask if he could drive it round to Andrea's house for me.
Once this was all over however, I had a wonderful time just being with Andrea, as ever, and she got me some fantastic gifts, such as Sneakers, a film which almost completes my hacker DVD collection except for one or two others, the last in the Baroque cycle books by Neal Stephenson, a new wallet, and some new earphones (more on the earphones in another post)..oh, and of course, a big valentines card! (Don't worry fearless readers, I couldn't get any more guilty if I tried, so it's okay.)
Andrea's the best gift though (and yes, I can get even more cornier if I try, don't push me or you'll regret it!) ;)
Now I'll try and get a few more posts done tonight, since I've been rather lax in the past week, but no promises, I do however have a few topics lined up to cover.
