This sketch took me a while to do, mainly because I needed to get the lines and angles right, as well as looking up and drawing the kanji characters on the blade (which if I anyone who knows kanji sees this will tell you still suck major arse, but I did my best at the time). This was an example of the idea I came up with for the Japanese mechs (or meta-mechs) in mine and Darrens now failed comic book, Terra Placetium. The base idea is that the pilots of these mechs are trained in classical Japanese war arts, as samurai, and the mech suits they wear enhance their skills, including sword skills (Ken-Jutsu). Their swords are very special in that they are created dynamically before battle (rather than being unsheathed) on a molecular level using nanotechnology, and this sketch shows the main katana (on the right hand, shorter wakazashi on the left) being created. The two carrier rods extend out from the wrist, and the sheath/hilt unit moves over the two carrier rods, crafting the katana from thin air as it goes, complete with the units name engraved in kanji into the sword, and as it reaches the end of sword it deactivates and slides back to the wrist as a hilt, the rod carriers sliding back into the wrist with it, leaving the blade magnetically held in place onto the mech's hand.
